Jerrald "Jerry" Goldsmith (1929-2004) was one of the most important composers that worked for the movie system in Hollywood. Pupil of Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, Jacob Gimpel and Miklos Rozsa, Goldsmith began working on radio and television in the 1950s and wrote his first complete score in 1957 for the oscure movie Black Patch. His last scores were the rejected one for Timeline (2003) and for Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). He won an Oscar for The Omen (1976). Among others, he wrote the music for Planet of the Apes (1968), Patton (1970), Papillon (1973), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Alien (1979), First Blood (1982), Gremlins (1984), Legend (1985), Lionheart (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), First Knight (1995) and Hollow Man (2000).
The Challenge (1982) is a movie directed by John Frankenheimer, written by John Sayles e Richard Maxwell and starred by Scott Glenn, Toshiro Mifune and Atsuo Nakamura. Duration: 112 minutes.
On the film:
"Entertaining but sometimes pretentious actioner, with American boxer Rick (Scott Glenn) becoming involved in conflict between brothers Toru Yoshida (Toshiro Mifune) and Hideo Yoshida (Atsuo Nakamura) over rights to family swords […] Exteriors shot mostly in Kyoto, Japan. Completely recut for Tv release as Sword of the Ninja, 97 minutes." [Leonard Maltin].
On this score (from www.jerrygoldsmithonline.com):
Over 60 minutes of one Goldsmith's most sort after, previously unreleased scores. Producers Prometheus have discovered a high quality source at the UCLA Film Music Archive and released the entire score on this limited edition CD. In order to preserve the vibrancy of the score there is some hiss but this is not a problem at all. The score sounds wonderful from the intense opening action cues to the soft and Legend (1985 Goldsmith score)-like beauty of the quieter interior of the CD, before the action is resurrected for the spectacular break in and final fight.
