The restrained, minimal burst-like flute-playing of Dizzy Divinity, the noisy, sharp Byzantine Prayer, the oddly metallic-sounding Frenetico il longing di amare, and the slightly less distinct Capricorn's Nostalgic Crickets II all make for an interesting package. Some spectralism is so abrasive it is irritating but not the case here.

Coincidences. Intriguing that this long out-of-print and unavailable CD of Radulescu should attract two reviews within a few months. In my case, it's been sleeping on my shelves for 15 years, after its initial hearing, along with a few other CDs of his music. Of course, there was no Amazon reviewing back then - there wasn't even an Amazon and, as for me, even Internet was some years away. I recently chanced Radulescu's Lao-Tzu Piano Sonatas (Lao Tsu Sonatas) and works for viola (two entries: Intimate Rituals or Intimate Rituals), and these prompted me to pull out what those previous CDs of Radulescu and give them a fresh hearing.

Horatiu Radulescu was an interesting and often fascinating composer in his willingness to explore un-chartered territories and try outlandish musical experiments. He was born in Bucarest in 1942 but established in France in 1969, acquiring French citizenship in 1974. He recently died, on September 25 2008. This recording was made in 1992, with himself conducting or performing. It centers around the flute(s).

Although not officially associated with the French school of "Musique Spectrale" whose main proponents are Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail, he was one of the first composers, in the 1970s, to make music based on the spectral properties of sound, e.g. the physical property of a tone to produce a spectre of overtones.

"Dizzy Divinity" from 1985 is written for solo flute of any type: big, alto, bass, baroque, or even Japane shakuhashi. It uses the full array of contemporary techniques (including performer's voice) and micro-tone producing fingerings. It sounds like a catalog of micro-tonal effects and I find its 13 minutes ultimately pretty tedious.

Not so with "Byzantine Prayer", composed in 1988 in homage to Giacinto Scelsi who had recently died. Radulescu calls it a requiem. It is scored for an orchestra of 40 flutes, arranged in concentric circles of 1 (octobass flute), 2 (double bass and bass flute), 3 (alto flutes), 5 (bass flutes), 8, 13 & 5 big flutes), 3 (alto flutes). It is typical Radulescu: slow moving micro-tonal, spectral (in all senses - acoustic and spiritual), ritualistic, fascinating.

Same fascinating ritualistic atmosphere in the slow-moving 24 minutes of "Frenetico il longing di amare" ("Frenetic the longing to love" - Radulescu had the knack for these titles). Radulescu invented what he called "Sound Icon", which is a concert grand piano put on its side and played directly on its spectrally retuned strings with fine, rosined threads, recalling the sound of the Indian Tampura. To the sound icon Radulescu here adds a softly moaning voice (sounding to me like some Tibetan chant - it even whistles at one point) and octobass flute. Not very dramatic, but certainly atmospheric and fascinating if you are in the right mood.

"Capricorn's Nostalgic Crickets II" is back to an ensemble of 7 flutes. As with the other pieces, the composer's explanations in the liner notes are way above my head, but the music again is ritualistic and slow-moving yet full of micro-tonal events, producing much variety within the sameness of timbre-color. An adventure in sound, really.

TT 75 minutes. Adda was an interesting and entreprising if not always very well focused French label from the early days of the CD. It was launched in the late LP era, released its first CDs in 1986 and folded in the mid-1990s. This Radulescu CD must have been one of their last productions (wonder if that's what caused it). Some of their material was subsequently picked up by other labels, such as Accord or Musidisc. There's an entry for this one on the French sister company, ASIN B00004ULCG, attributed to the label "M10", but I'm not sure that's not just a distributor; anyway, it doesn't seem offered very often. There another entry for this same Adda disc on this website, Dizzy Divinity / Byzantine Prayer / Frenetico Il Longing di Amare / Capricorn's Nostalgic Crickets II, and you may want to check it out too, but there doesn't seem to be much activity there either. So if you are interested try the famous auction site or other internet sellers, and be patient. In the meanwhile you can check the above-mentioned viola disc, "Intimate Rituals" (see link above). It is great, typical Radulescu, and at the time of writing, cheap.
