This is what one could call “Macho-men-muscles-sweaty-armpits-where-is-my-beer-rock”! The whole romantic idea of musical warfare is blown to smithereens. No, my dear friends, High On Fire shows war in its ugly naked truth on ‘Blessed Black Wings’.Tracklist:
Of course I could state that High On Fire sounds like a devilish crossbreed between Motörhead and Slayer on ‘Blessed Black Wings’, but that would be stating the obvious. Anyone who knows the work of guitarist/ vocalist Matt Pike and his friends knows where he gets his merchandise. Fact remains that High On Fire acts like a bull with pepper up his ass in a china shop. The shards fly all over the place. The opener ‘Devilution’ makes instantly clear that High On Fire doesn’t take prisoners. The raunchy, full sound of the band is supported by an at least as raunchy production, for which Steve Albini (i.e. Nirvana, Pixies) was responsible. Especially the dark rolling bass- and drum sound are impressive. And it is the start of a war in which some of the battles are lost (i.e. ‘The Face Of Oblivion’ and ‘To Cross The Bridge’), but the whole of the campaign can be regarded as a success. Just listen to the aggressive ‘Anointing Of Seer’, the grunge-esque ‘Brother In The Wind’ or the absolute highlight and compelling ‘Silver Back’.
For anyone who’s into the more rugged kind of stuff, this CD is worth the walk to your local record store. And there are some great extra’s available. The initial pressing of the CD features a bonus DVD with live material and who buys the vinyl version of this album gets a bonustrack ‘Rapid Fire’ for free.
