On 1 May 1761, at the age of twenty-nine, Joseph Haydn officially became Vice-Capel-Meister to Prince Paul II Anton Esterházy, after having been Director of Music (Musikdirektor) to Count Karl Joseph von Morzin, who had squandered his fortune and had to disband his orchestra. Much has been made of the contract he signed that day. However, despite its demanding terms, it is not true that Haydn was reduced to the level of a servant, far from it, and his salary of 400 Gulden a year was double what he received from Count Morzin. But one of its restrictive clauses did forbid him to communicate to anyone new compositions requested by the prince, and to compose for anyone else without the monarch’s “gracious permission”. Although there were many breaches of this article four of his contract, Haydn had to wait almost eighteen years before signing a new one on 1 January 1779, in which this exclusive clause was omitted. He was now free to sell his music openly to publishers – in Vienna, London or Paris. Only a few months earlier, the firm of Carlo Artaria (and family), an art and map publisher in Vienna, had extended its activities to music. In 1779, they contacted Haydn, and in April 1780 published a collection of his piano sonatas, the first of more than three hundred editions of his works including, of course, many of his keyboard trios, notably the four recorded here. Haydn’s correspondence with Artaria on the subject reveals many new facets of the composer’s profession.
