    When I heard Hegge's previous album, "Feeling", for the first time, I was wildly excited. There was something about the immediacy and the squeak-free playing with built-in resistance and thick nerves. Here at Berget, we are spoiled for bands that make a celebration of jazz history and make it sound fresh. Hegge is among the best in the area, and playfulness is one of the qualities managed. The quintet on "Beyond Your Wildest Streams" is the same as on "Feeling" from 2020: Jonas Kullhammar on tenor saxophone, Martin Myhre Olsen on soprano and alto saxophone, Vigleik Storaas on piano, Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums and cymbals and Bjørn Marius Hegge on bass. The latter has also composed the songs.

    "Beyond Your Wildest Streams" starts with drums. A rhythmically tasty aperitif lasting just over a minute. Håkon Mjåset Johansen sets us in motion and raises expectations for what will come. It's a move that's as unexpected as it works well, and when the band plunges into tight arrangements, I willingly allow myself to be enveloped. Bjørn Marius Hegge has a flair for good-natured themes and inviting arrangements. He allows the apparently simple to mingle with the twisted.

    The two saxophonists have in common that they obviously mean what they play. The emphasis and sense of swing in "Musak" and the joy of storytelling in "The Pentatone Suite I, II and III" have the top shelf as their home address. The strutting skill of the two performers makes the intricacy flow effortlessly. They bring the many scaffoldings of music together. "Beyond Your Wildest Streams" is a varied album. Hegge's compositions point here and there. Against the 60s music on Blue Note, against Coltrane, Cannonball and Ornette, but they also stand firmly on the quintet's own legs. The melodious and rhythmically inviting gets a personal twist in the five-leaf clover's hands. They even manage to add weight to the upbeat.

    Vigleik Storaas is largely present, both at the back and at the front. On the last track, with the amusing title "Til Viggis", he can be heard as a connoisseur of style and a top-class performer. Both he and the band create buoyancy in the music, and the main character Bjørn Marius forms part of the solid drive that pumps substance right to the outer edges. No one weighs more than anyone else in this band. They make team play their primary concern. I am left with much the same impression of "Beyond Your Wildest Streams" as I had of "Feeling" a couple of years ago. The infectious excess and the easy-to-understand nature of the music work invigoratingly. The light tone is easy to take in, because it is not overpowering.
