Tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley teamed up with a couple of his more notable employers (pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey) plus trumpeter Art Farmer and bassist Doug Watkins for this superior Blue Note album which has been reissued (along with two alternate takes) on CD. Mobley's "Funk in Deep Freeze" is the most memorable selection but on a whole the six compositions (all Mobley originals) display his underrated writing talents. It is a particular joy to hear the inspired playing of Silver and Blakey on this lesser-known but consistently stimulating hard bop set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
