The title referes to a celebrated riposte of Louis Armstrong's when asked by a white lady what jazz really was. In the context of that his quotation of the celebrated waltz theme at the beginning of "Black Danube," a tune described by drummer Carvin as "James Brown in 3/4 time," has to be seen as slightly ironic in the context of Bluiett's now thoroughly Africanized approach to jazz performance. The rhythmic base, whether by Carvin or Asante, is in most cases the essence of the piece, over which Bluiett improvises with considerabl freedom. His alto flute makes an effective opening to "If Only We Knew" and Asante's percussion line bridges the piece with "T.S. Monk, Sir" on which the baritone and bass punch out a respecful pastiche of the great pianist. Guitarist Thomas Ebow Ansah's vocal "Ei Owora Befame-Ko" is built on a syncopated chord sequence of the sort Bluiett instinctively heads for in his own compositions, and the two voices harmonize superbly with Bluiett punctuating the melody with great bull-roar effects.
The last but one track of the session is perhaps the most straightforward and the most conventionally jazz-orientated. "The Gift: One Shot From The Hip" has the kind of headlong, thunderous urgency that Bluiett can generate as a soloist, with Hopkins and Carvin tucked in behind like a three-man bob team. The bassist gets his big feature on "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," but it's on "The Gift" that his long-standing commitment to Bluiett's music pays its most generous dividends.
