“The Mountain” – the 3rd studio album by the London-born prog starlets HAKEN. Mixed and mastered by the legendary Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Devin Townsend, Symphony X etc.). Classic Rock presents Prog Magazine calls them "prodigiously talented youths that will benefit prog." and Outburn Magazine (USA) says: "Say hello to Haken, your newest musical masturbation fantasy."

This album has blown my mind. As a fan of everything from Genesis to Dillinger, Fates to Steven Wilson, Crimson to Katatonia and back again, I tend to live by the "4/4 is a bore" motto. That said, mindless noodling is also a bore - truly great prog is composed and arranged in a way that at one turn drops your jaw with unimaginable complexity, swells your heart with enlightened melody and harmony in the next, and on rare occasions churns both together in a perfect alchemy of left/right brain ecstasy. *This* is The Mountain - an absolutely devious ocean of sound from a band I knew little of other than name before 2013.

We like to draw comparisons for the sake of explaining something new, but while I might say "What happens if you cross Spocks Beard with Meshuggah?" or "Shudder to Think with Mr. Bungle?" or "Animals as Leaders with Gentle Giant?" "Tesseract with Yes?" … all of these descriptions take away from the cohesive sound and vision that Haken has crafted here. While you can certainly imagine any number of influences - Haken stands alone. What is truly impressive is that this "confluence of influence" is drawing from such a diverse history yet is immediately and directly identifiable as unique.

In an epic 2013 that included The Raven That Refused to Sing, Altered State, Darkness in a Different Light, Dethroned and Uncrowned, and a shockingly good return to form for DT, the fact that this recording is consistently in my queue is testament to its triumph. Essential listening.
