Hafez Modirzadeh - Post-Chromodal Out! (2012)

Post-Chromodal Out! represents the next step in Iranian-American saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh's quest to create a seamless cross-cultural exchange of musical structures between the Persian dastgah and American jazz. Much was put into practice by Modirzadeh along with Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar in their co-led project Radif Suite ("scintillating. a radical cultural exchange" New York Times; "thick with ideas and inspiration" Los Angeles Times). On "Post-Chromodal Out!" Modirzadeh takes the concept one step further by introducing a piano re-tuned to a variation on Persian temperament. Performing this music is the Grammy Award-nominated pianist Vijay Iyer, who takes on the instrument with an improvisatory mastery befitting his own reputation for combining jazz with the music of different cultures. The addition of the re-tuned piano results in music that is like nothing that has been attempted before. It promises to shake Western music's harmonic foundation, while still concentrating on the lyricism and rhythmic sensibility of jazz, a further testament to the transformational potential of this unique American art form.
