Four movements, fast-fast-slow-fast, 30 minutes long – one couldn't be blamed for guessing that Hamerik's 6th symphony was composed in the 1st half of the 19th century. Not to mention, the rather conventional melodic conception. Harmonically, though, it becomes obvious that it is a 2nd-half-composition, penned in 1897. The small scale can be attributed to forces that were beyond Hamerik's control: He was musical director in Baltimore, and the brass and horn players were all on strike, so he had to write a strings-only composition.
It's a charming piece, perfectly suited for the
occassion for which it was written: Hamerik's 25th anniversary as director of Baltimore's Peabody Institute. Most of his orchestral compositions were made during his time as teacher/conductor in Baltimore – not surprisingly, Hamerik is better known in the USA than in Europe. Obviously, a composer to give another listen to, especially to find out, wether his music was more forward looking than the harmonic suprises in this symphony.
Niels Wilhelm Gade is arguably the most famous composer of Denmark. His influence reached well beyond his home country. He was a friend/assistant of Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Schumann, before returning to Copenhagen in 1848 due to the war between Prussia and Denmark.
Both pieces on this disc were composed later in Gade's career, when he was director of the Copenhagen Musical Society, a position which enabled him to teach a long list of aspiring composers – such as Asger Hamerik, Edvard Grieg and Carl Nielsen. Not sure, if I can really trace the influence, though.
Maybe this is the reason, why his music is a lot more conventional, compared to that of composers like Brahms, Bruckner, not to mention Mahler or Schoenberg who were also active during those times. Nice melodic ideas to be found in the Novelletters, but nothing really inventive or sensational. Still a good introduction to orchestral music rooted in Danish tradition and musical history. (by me)
