“Chimes of Memory” is a diverse collection of works by the Danish composer and musician Fuzzy (b. 1939). In the title work, recorded on a historic digital audio workstation at the Danish Radio, Fuzzy gazes deep into the well of memory. In the other works we meet magnificent organ music written for the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris alongside witty, experimental and dream-like sounds played on saxophone, harp and, not least, the composer’s beloved old grand piano before it ended its days beneath the stars at the Copenhagen waste incinerator.
Not many people have ever heard of Fuzzy, but after hearing 'Flashlight' (this album's opening track), I just had to hear more. From the aforementioned opener,which is pure, happy, crunchy rock, through to tracks like 'Almond' (which is a magnificent homage to failed romance, the kind that is so bittersweet you want to smile and cry all at the same time), this album is fantastic: It's the reason why pop is beautiful.
