Ex-Deo was formed by Kataklysm vocalist Maurizio Iacono. It also includes his bandmates, guitarist JF Dagenais (who also produced the album), guitarist Stephane Barbe and drummer Max Duhamel. Bassist Francois Mongrain (Martyr) and keyboardist Jonathan Leduc (Blackguard) round out the lineup. The band’s debut is a concept album about the Roman Empire. As you’d probably expect, Ex Deo sounds a lot like Kataklysm, but there are some differences-Romulus combines death metal with symphonic elements to create an epic sound. Some intensity is sacrificed for melody and atmosphere, but there’s still plenty of aggression here. Leduc’s keyboards are a really strong influence. From subtle background atmospheres to front and center symphonic parts, the keyboards add a lot. It features guest appearances from vocalist Nergal (Behemoth), guitarist Karl Sanders (Nile) and guitarist Obsidian C (Keep Of Kalessin).
