Nice new release by Nene (Pedro Lugo Martinez), one of the singers for Jovenes Clasicos del Son. The music’s in the son/salsa range and it’s soft and intimate and very acoustic. Big coros, too, making the recording seem almost symphonic at times, as if 150 people were there to back Nene up; it’s really good. And Nene has one of those old Cuban voices, too, making things interesting; he’s not a timba singer, high and pinched. He sings about how Cuba was about to forget about the son, and he came along with some others and reinvented it, which might be overstating the case, but he’s really good and a traditionalist and everyone has a place at the table. Plus, when he gets going, forget it, the guy’s super imaginative, mixing a ton of rhythms together. With arrangements by José Luis Cortés (NG La Banda), Lozada, Osnel R. and others.01. Opening
