Il disco raccoglie 16 cover di popolari brani italiani, scelti da Laura Pausini tra i suoi cavalli di battaglia degli anni in cui cantava nei pianobar della riviera romagnola, oppure tra i pezzi che hanno fatto da colonna sonora della sua vita o di una sua storia d'amore. Laura Pausini ha dichiarato di aver voluto pubblicaro Io canto allo scopo di far conoscere le canzoni dei suoi colleghi al pubblico straniero e ai più giovani che ancora non le hanno scoperte.
Tutti i brani inclusi nel disco sono stati scritti ed interpretati da noti cantautori italiani, tutti uomini: secondo quanto dichiarato da Laura Pausini, questa caratteristica non è il frutto di una scelta voluta, ma solo il risultato casuale della scrematura dei brani operata per arrivara alla tracklist finale. La scelta delle canzoni è partita da un elenco di 152 brani, comprendenti anche Ho messo via di Luciano Ligabue, Gocce di memoria di Giorgia e Piccolo uomo di Mia Martini. Tra i brani provinati è incluso anche E' non è di Niccolò Fabi, poi reso disponibile come bonus track per la versione del disco scaricabile tramite iTunes.
All'interno dell'album sono presenti 3 duetti: in Non me lo so spiegare Laura Pausini duetta con l'autore del brano, Tiziano Ferro, mentre i brani Come il sole all'improvviso e Il mio canto libero sono cantanti rispettivamente insieme a Johnny Hallyday e Juanes.
In occasione della pubblicazione del disco, la cantante romagnola ha annunciato un possibile seguito ma, nonostante il successo ottenuto, Io canto resta fino ad oggi l'unico disco di cover pubblicato da Laura Pausini.
L'album, distribuito in 47 Paesi, è stato pubblicato anche in lingua spagnola con il titolo Yo canto.

The disc collects 16 cover of Italian folk songs, selected by Laura Pausini among its war horses of the year in which he sang in piano bars in the Romagna Riviera, or between the pieces that were the soundtrack of his life and his story 'love. Laura Pausini said he wanted publicist I sing in order to make known the songs of his colleagues to foreign audiences and younger who have not yet discovered.
All the tracks on the disc were written and performed by famous Italian singers, all men, as declared by Laura Pausini, this feature is not the result of a deliberate but the result of casual skimming of the songs made for the arrivara final tracklist. The choice of songs came from a list of 152 songs, including I also put away of Luciano Ligabue, Giorgia Drops memory and Little Man Mia Martini. Among the songs included specimens is also E 'is not Niccolò Fabi, then made available as a bonus track on the disk version downloadable through iTunes.
Inside there are 3 duets album: I do not know how to explain to Laura Pausini duet with the author of the song, Tiziano Ferro, while tracks like the sun suddenly my free song singers are respectively with Johnny Hallyday and Juanes.
At the album's release, the singer Romagna announced a possible result, but despite this success, I sing to this day remains the only album of covers released by Laura Pausini.
The album, distributed in 47 countries, was also published in Spanish under the title Yo song.
