Renaud Garcia-Fons is well familiar with world music fans, as the 5-string acoustic bass player has a large number of Mediterranean world fusion recordings with many guest musicians. Dorantes [David Peña Dorantes] is less well known here. A nuevo flamenco pianist and composer, nephew of cantaor El Lebrijano, Dorantes has elegant classical style, influenced by de Falla and the Impressionists, but is well versed in jazz, too. Indeed, his piano work is an extraordinary blending.

Together with Garcia-Fons, he performs flamenco-inspired pieces in standard form: bulerías, malagueña, guarjiras, soleá, garrotín y livianas, siguriya, tangos. Garcia-Fons bows his bass often to complement the percussive piano. Both artists are improvisers as well as composers; indeed, flamenco is a improvisational art. Thus, the tunes are built upon melodic phrases common to both, but their expertise develops and expands the essence into delightful nuevo flamenco/jazz explorations. The two had collaborated before in Dorantes' album Sin Muros! [exclamation in title]. This duet will surely please jazz, flamenco, and world music fans. I am very impressed by Dorantes piano work and expect that his talent will soon be better appreciated here in the USA. I rejoice in this album.
