The fifth album from this Washington DC psych-rock trio is their most satisfying yet. It's still hard not to argue that their magnificently woozy thrum is best experienced live and loud, but on Old Growth the songs behind their slow, tentacular riffing and shimmering jams take more defined shape than ever. The template is still 1970s rock à la Black Sabbath, tending towards the long form, slo-mo end of things, lightened by Jason Simon's sleepily pretty vocals. But the lovely, music-box hush of Down Here is new, and I'm Gone has them looking back a decade further for its melodic and rhythmic impetus. The vague, mystic spook of the lyrics won't trouble your attention too much, and indeed it's the exquisite, burnished fabric of the music itself that does the real talking here: in full flight of one of their frequent psychedelic crescendos, Dead Meadow are among rock's most eloquently deafening joys.
