David Gordon Trio - Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band (2016)

Mister Sam Records and Nova are delighted to announce the release of Alexander Scriabin s Ragtime Band , the new album from the David Gordon Trio their sixth. The 14 tracks of the album celebrate the music of this great Russian piano-poet, mystic and synaesthete with jazz interpretations of some of his exquisite piano miniatures, alongside popular music from around the time of his death, in 1915. The result is that on one mind-blowing album, ambient rock, choro, doo-wop, tango and free-bop rub shoulders with the eponymous rag (which gets the makeover to end all makeovers), all infused with the wit and vibrancy characteristic of this remarkable trio that bears the name of composer, jazz pianist and harpsichordist, David Gordon, a musician without limits. This is an album that could not have been conceived by many and that even fewer could have executed. Together with guest guitarist newcomer Calum Heath on two tracks, it features three musicians whose broad musical perspectives effortlessly allow them to approach this singular repertoire. Founded in 1995, the David Gordon Trio are certainly no newcomers and, having been accorded particular success in Japan, their star continues to climb in the UK. The Trio features Berklee-trained drummer Paul Cavaciuti and acclaimed double bassist Jonty Fisher. David was described by Phil Johnson of the Independent as a richly gifted player with a sparkling style and boundless imagination . John Etheridge said that he has the wonderful ability to make piano notes glisten like jewelled drops of water . With Alexander Scriabin s Ragtime Band the David Gordon Trio have created something that could only exist here and now, yet is redolent of a heady era of innovation and novelty. Scriabin himself may have said his goodbyes but his inventiveness and élan lives on here. Many albums are described as a journey: this one almost literally is.
