DAVID DARLING is a classically trained, eclectically inclined musician with an infectious energy, a sumptuous sound, and a maverick spirit. He is accomplished and acclaimed internationally as a recording artist, composer, educator, conductor, and performer.
Darling's career began as a band and orchestra teacher/conductor with a specialty in cello and bass. During his college and post-graduate training, he developed new improvisational ideas for the cello, in an effort to create a new role for the instrument.

He spent the 70's on parallel tracks: as a studio musician in Nashville, working with country musicians including Johnny Cash; and with the Paul Winter Consort, touring nationally and internationally for eight years as soloist, composer, and singer.

His seven solo recordings have received rave reviews. He's appeared on many other artists' albums, performing in a wide variety of genres – jazz, pop, rock, country western, and new age. Among the notables with whom Darling has performed and collaborated are Bobby McFerrin; Peter, Paul, and Mary; the members of Oregon; Spyro Gyra; Terje Rypdal; Jan Garbarek; Pilobolus; and Joseph Campbell.

In 1992 Darling's original music for Wim Wenders' film Until the End of the World, starring William Hurt, received national airplay and excellent reviews. His most recent solo recording Cello (ECM Records, 1992, produced by Manfred Eicher), has been selected for soundtrack use by the legendary French director Jean-Luc Godard.

Darling's Hearts of Space debut was Eight String Religion. extends and develops the extraordinary charm and musicality of his personal expression.
