Faramarz Payvar - Darvish Khan Works

, the son Of HâJi Bashir Taleqâni, was born in 1872 in Tehran. At 11 he enlisted in the Depaent of Music in Dâr-oI-Fonun (Polytechnic Schoo1), where he was taught musical notation, as well as drum and trumpet playing. For a while Darvish played side-drum in the music bands belonging to Malijak (Azizossoltân) and Kâmrân Mirzâ (then the Viceroy). He, then, went to study târ and setâr by Âqâ Hossein-Qoli and made his way to the court Of Prince Sho'â'ossaltaneh, who was then the governor of Fars province, and accompanied the Prince to Shiraz where he dwelt and get married. His salary was not enough and he also served other nobilities of the city. This outraged Prince Sho'â'ossaltaneh who ordered to cut off Darvish's fingers. The horrible punishment was suspended through the intervention of KamâIossaItaneh, father of Abolhasan Sabâ (himself a great musician to be prominent in later days). Darvish Khân left Shiraz for Tehran,where he ultimately dwelt and founded a school of music. Prince Sho'â'ossaltaneh became aware of his quasi-escape migration and sent his page to persuade him to return immediately to Shiraz. Darvish seeked asylum in the house of one of his friends who was e janitor of the British Embassy in Tehran. He was introduced to e Ambassador and when he and thee wife of the British Ambassador pIayed a târ and piano duo, the ambassador wrote a letter to the Prince asking for his freedom. Afterwards, Darvish spent most Of his time in music teaching and composing, and headed the Orchestra of Akhavân-e Safayi. Metric pieces at that time mainly comprised of pieces in 6:8 time, as well as s and s of radif, and some s. Darvish invented ''pishdarâmad'' as an orchestral introduction. Before Darvish, the ensembles were used to pIay some short preludes by Mohammad Sâdeq Khân or Âqâ Hossein-QoIi, whereas Darvish had a totaIly new concept of musical introduction and managed also to expand it. Some of his own works are in the continuation of past addition, some are innovations made by him. His pishdarâmads show some genuine characters totally his own.
