Darius Quartet Jones - Book of Mae'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) (2012)

AUM Fidelity kicks off its 15th anniversary year with the release of New York-based alto saxophonist/composer Darius Jones Book of Mæ bul (Another Kind of Sunrise), the third verse in his ongoing Man ish Boy epic. This recording, featuring Jones working quartet with pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Ches Smith, introduces a new titular character, Mæ bul, to the universe he is creating in close collaboration with graphic artist Randal Wilcox. Since delivering one of the great jazz debuts of the past decade (Britt Robson, eMusic.com) in 2009, Darius Jones has been called a singular talent (Brian Morton, Jazz Journal), one of the most impressive and unique voices of our time (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and a skilled composer, a hugely soulful saxophonist, and an assured leader (François Couture, AllMusic.com). Jones seemed to arrive fully formed, emerging immediately as a leader rather than serving time in apprenticeships, declares DownBeat s Shaun Brady in his February feature. His collaborations have been selective: stints with bassist Trevor Dunn s Proof Readers, drummer Mike Pride s From Bacteria To Boys and the eardrum-piercing collective quartet Little Women. But his main project is to tell his own story, and his first two CDs only scratch the surface. Starting with this new release, Jones is building on a very fruitful 2011 that saw him play numerous gigs under his own name, earn his second consecutive nomination for Up & Coming Artist of the Year at the Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards and appear on best-of-the-year lists in a variety of publications, including a Top 20 finish for his latest, Big Gurl, in the prestigious Rhapsody Jazz Critics Poll.
