Blues at Sunrise is by all measure a roots record inspired by blues, traditional country, roots rock, and jazz. Although there are touches of modern alternative or grunge rock on the track “Fuzz Blues”, and more experimental acid jazz guitar soloing on “Jazz Harp Blues”; almost the entirety of the record holds a sound where American roots music dominates.

The second non-instrumental track, “Stand By Your Door”, incorporates a Country/honky-tonk vibe with gruff vocals. The first vocal track, “Ride, Ride”, is a thumping country-acoustic slide guitar song with romping piano and baritone vocals. The smooth jazz of “Summer Breeze” was as exciting and joy filled to improvise as it was to produce. The fat tube overdrive of “Shuffle Head” was surprisingly enough coaxed out of a cheap crate-tube amp.

The two harmonica instrumental takes of “Sunrise Blues”, the one with and the one without guitar, are fundamentally similar except for the stripped one having a more unrefined and visceral texture to it. The one with added rhythm and lead guitar is tracked over the original, to hopefully add more texture. We also added honky tonk piano to include diversity. The last vocal track is a cover of the blues traditional “Walkin’ Blues”, with guitar and harmonica vamping and a melodic piano solo in the breakdown of the song.

Most of the session piano was done by my good friend Dana Goodwin, and the session bass guitar was played by producer Mike Woods. Drum tracks were also produced by Mike Woods. For the end of the record I decided to involve my good friend and rhythm guitar player in the guitar tracking of the final song “Eclipse”. You can hear his lead playing on the end of that track. We hope that you enjoy this roots record as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Warm Regards, Collin Taylor & the Blues Jets
