“True love is as much about darkness and heartbreak as light and redemption. It’s an unpredictable and confusing landscape to walk through. Another world, another planet. And to me, that’s how this record sounds. A melancholy, cinematic, personal reflection on love and loneliness.

“After my 3rd solo record, ‘New Worlds’, I found myself turning away from the guitar and more towards synth-infused music. I released an EP under the name Sylver Tongue, a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max inspired character. That character helped me break out of a creative standstill – but paradoxically, the songs I was writing were very personal and emotional, with lyrics that were more honest and direct.

“Around the same time, I started writing the soundtrack for Gavin Rothery’s sci-fi short ‘The Last Man’. I’ve always been a sci-fi film buff, and I started to revisit a lot of soundtracks from the 1970s and 1980s – Vangelis’ Bladerunner, the Artemiev and Martinez soundtracks for Solaris… These were a huge influence. My Juno 60 and Rhodes Chroma keyboard took centre stage.

“I also connected with fellow sci-fi obsessive Michael Lovett from NZCA Lines. Our influences overlapped so much it made perfect sense for us to start writing songs together. Four of them appear on the record. The two instrumental tracks – ‘Lonely Waltz’ and ‘True Love’ – grew out of music I had left over from writing ‘The Last Man’. But the whole thing is inspired by love, heartbreak and forgiveness. It’s a record about being lost and trying to be found.”
