A veteran composer, Charles Fussell has served as an important figure in the musical lives of Boston and New York for over 20 years. As evidenced in this recording, Cymbeline, Fussell writes for the voice comfortably and idiomatically. He has an authentic gift for text setting and his vocal lines are unabashedly lyrical and expressive. After writing thoroughly chromatic music in his Eurydice (1973) and Etudes and Portraits (1977), Fussell wanted to bring something fresh to tonality in Cymbeline. “Not in a minimal style but with the full richness of key, modulation, imitation, and all that goes with it.” Cymbeline is the composer’s musical depiction of Shakespeare’s play of the same name bearing the wondrous language of the seasoned playwright. Within 15 musical selections, connected or set-up by a spoken text, the entire story of intrigue and deception is told. This marks the second BMOP/sound recording of Fussell’s works. The first, Wilde (2008), was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Classical Vocal Performance” category for the extraordinary performance by Sanford Sylvan (baritone).
