This is the Bunk Johnson World Transcription session, beautifully recorded in World's superior recording studios. It's not a typical Bunk session with George Lewis and Jim Robinson, but a West Coast studio session with well-known artists such as Floyd O'Brien, Wade Whaley, Frank Pasley, Red Callender and Lee Young (includes alternate and incomplete takes). This CD also includes tracks by the man who learned the art of playing the blues by absorbing everything Bunk played…Louis Armstrong. With him are J.C. Higginbotham, Jack Teagarden, Sidney Bechet, Bud Freeman, Fats Waller, Al Casey, Paul Barbarin and others. Includes material from the Second Esquire Jazz Concert, Louis' only recording with Bunk, and a 1938 Saturday Night Swing Club broadcast.

In 1944, to somehow get the found—from-long-lost Bunk Johnson into a major recording studio continued to be the goal of his many benefactors. Although he had been recorded twice (previous to this session), both were under rather mediocre conditions, in fact one session was done in the storage room of a New Orleans music store converted into a makeshift recording studio. This was all going to be changed now as one of his staunch supporters, Gene Williams of Decca Records, and Bill Colburn, Bunk’s West Coast mentor, arranged to have Bunk record for World Broadcasting System, Inc., then an associate of Decca, who recorded music released only on sixteen-inch transcriptions made for radio broadcasting and not available to the general record-buying public. Bunk had little success during his year and a half in San Francisco, so he was heading back to New Iberia, Louisiana, to wait and see where his new-found career might be heading. The World recording date was arranged for the Los Angeles studio, a stopover on his way home by train. Colburn lined up the Kid Ory band, then playing in Los Angeles, to record with Bunk. They had played along with Bunk in a concert at the Geary Theatre in San Francisco the preceding year and that had been successful. When Bunk arrived in Los Angeles on the day prior to the recording date, he learned that Kid Ory had told Colburn that neither he nor his band would record as only unnamed members of a band with Bunk as leader. It is shameful that this recording session planned with such a compatible group of musicians did not materialize. Bill Russell, who was the first one to rediscover Bunk (with no teeth, no horn, and no money) in New Iberia in 1939, told me he had a letter (now lost) that Colburn had written to him relating all the problems with the World recording date. Urgent calls went out to everyone in an attempt to locate musicians familiar with Bunk’s earlier style who could and would play on the session. Wade Whaley, who worked part-time as a musician, said he would play the date. Whaley was from New Orleans and had played with Johnson in the Geary concert although he was not the regular Ory clarinet man. Floyd O'Brien, a Chicago trombone player who had been with the Bob Crosby Band for a while, had previously joined Bunk on a Sunday after- noon gig in San Francisco, liked his playing and quickly agreed to record on the session. The only Ory man to risk the wrath of his boss was Fred Washington. Fred probably located the other men, Red Callender, a youthful modern bassist of that time, and drummer Lee Young the junior brother of Lester.
Combining the sounds of this CD with the photographs will bring us fans absent July 11, 1944 as close to being at the recording session as is possible. As this was Bunk's date, the tunes were selected by him and it seems apparent that his associates sometimes falter from unfamiliarity and we find Bunk showing them the way, particularly on the first choruses. George Buck here pre- sents the music just as it was recorded with the false starts and breakdowns included. If you listen carefully you will hear a voice (Bunk?) on several occasions giving the band direction. In one instance, Floyd O'Brien just hits a loud string of notes to call a halt to a bad take. The bell signalling the band to start the second take of Ballin’ the Iack makes you feel as if you're in the control room in charge of the record date.
Don't let the statements lead you to think this record is of only historical importance. The music made this day is great; Bunk was in top form. Although Bunk finds himself with bedfellows who did not know the tunes intimately and were not altogether familiar with his style of playing he somehow gets them all together for some great music. It is also interesting to hear how he performs without George Lewis and Co. In fact, I found myself eagerly comparing the same tunes performed by this band with those recorded versions usually associated with Bunk. One title, Spicy Advice, was written by Bunk (the sheet music cover from my collections pictured) but never recorded by Bunk or anyone else except in this World Broadcasting version included here. I think also that note should be made of the excellent sound quality of these recordings, for, in my opinion, they are superior to all other of Bunk’s recordings.
