I was a bit hesitant when I spotted this set in the store yesterday. After all, who needs another complete recording of the Brahms symphonies? Hasn't everything been said? Are not all these symphonies overplayed, over-interpreted and over-recorded by now?
Well, not really. I am happy that I grabbed this set for various reasons. Not that Rattle's Brahms is the final answer to this repertoire. Nobody's recording could be. But Rattle offers something I don't find in the other recordings. Namely, a focus on the more solemn, slow parts of the symphonies, during which he brings the Berlin Philharmonic to display the structure and the colors more clearly than other conductors have done before him – at least that is my impression.But he also brings out the passion and grandeur, which are an essential part of Brahms' music. You can't conduct the 1st and 3rd symphonies without fire!
Having said that, both 1 and 3 are certainly not my favorite recordings in this set. 2 and 4 are, maybe because of Rattle's focus on the slow movements? The playing of the Berlin Phil. is splendid throughout this entire set. The sessions took place during concert performances. (me, wursthans :) )
