The first studio release in seven years from drummer/composer Bob Moses, Time Stood Still is one of those potpourris that inspire awe, delight and the occasional moment of bewilderment. Moses has a finger in virtually every stylistic pie: jazz, funk Latin, Hip-hop. Yet his real predilection is for the backbeat, which explains why he avoids his ride cymbal like the plague and employs both an upright and electric bassist. The resulting sound is bottom-heavy and mostly irresistible.
It doesn't hurt that Moses is a marvelous arranger. Listen to the way he voices muted trumpets and bass clarinet on "Lost In Your Eyes," or the oddball harmonies that grace the final chorus of "Jaco" (a Pastorius tribute with predictable high-note bass playing). Everybody in Moses' middle-to-big band performs with precision – no surprise, considering the leader's reputation for meticulous rehearsal – but the soloists have a field day too, especially Rob Scheps on tenor sax and Miles Evans on trumpet. This is music for the heart, head, and always, the feet.
