Black Pyramid's 'Stormbringer' collects all the out-of-print and hard to find vinyl only tracks.

While their 2009 full length debut didn’t rock my world (but see THE DOOMMANTIA REVIEW), I very much like their 2nd full length called Stormbringer. According to my last.fm I’m on 71 plays already, so Black Pyramid will definitely end up in my last.fm’s top three this week. Actually, after listening to this album quite some time, I found it’s not actually a new album. I was confused after reading a post on their facebook, mentioning another new album.

Turns out, Stormbringer is a compilation of a 7” and rare Black Pyramid songs. According to the Hydro-Phonic records site, Stormbringer features “all the out-of-print and hard to find vinyl only tracks. Stormbringer and Cloud of Unknowing (from the Die Cut 8"), Illumination and Warswine (from the Old One Split) Macedonia (from the S/T LP) and Caravan (from the original s/t 7".” I wasn’t familiar with any of these releases, but I’m more than happy to have all the mentioned songs on one disc.

The funny thing is, Black Pyramid does manage to sound both refreshingly new, while nodding to the greatest players in the field, and ultimately sounding to me like a slightly friendlier version of High On Fire (less evil).
The tracks Stormbringer and Cloud Of Unknowing are the ‘best’ you will get nowadays from the great field of doom. Illumination (a track of 14 minutes plus) is slow, sexy and is riffian heavy stoner at its best if you’d ask me.

Black Pyramid uses the art of repetition and minimal variation to create this beautiful behemoth of a track. It’s so slow you can even sing along. After nine minutes we get an acceleration in speed while the last seven minutes bring Illumination nicely back home safe. Here their love for heavy psych can be heard, while the outro transforms into a heavy melodic riff, returning to the starting riff. Killer track!

Warswine is actually a little bit of heavy (early) Monster Magnet if I may be so bold. What strikes me once again, is that this album simply works (as other great albums do) because of the combination of an awesome rhythm section, plain good songwriting and great vocals. I know this sounds as a knockdown argument, but still. And another clincher: the greatest trick of this album is that you will not grow tired of these six tracks. Macedonia is relatively up-tempo instrumental track, transforming into a classic hard rock riff, musically just as entertaining as a track with vocals. Caravan starts beautifully slow after which another monster of a riff sets in. Yes, this is their emo doom song, and it rocks just the same, starring some great vocals.

With tracks like these, it’s impossible to name a favorite. Stormbringer: 49 minutes of pure doom bliss. Buy it!
After being overwhelmed by listening to this album, I thought how about giving that first full length a couple of spins. Yet, no luck, I can’t find my way into their debut. But Stormbringer will surely make 2011’s top five…..10/10
