Black Aces - Anywhere But Here (2017)

Black Aces have done it again. Another meat-and-potatoes pub rock album that fans of Australian style rock will salivate over has been delivered. Some may say that too many bands sound far too much like AC/DC and lack originality. I fall in the camp of ‘who cares’? AC/DC were the biggest band in rock and roll, and are dead and gone forever now as we knew them. This has left a large black hole in the industry and I for one thank God that bands such as Black Aces continually crank out stellar albums and keep the sound alive. I just wish the major labels would wake up and realize there’s a whole new generation of horny, hung-up James Deans out there feeling isolated, out of it, frustrated and yearning for expression. Black Aces are playing their song.

What Anywhere But Here delivers a little differently this time around for Black Aces is that while retaining an AC/DC influence, they are starting to confidently step out from under the AC/DC shadow. This is still straight ahead fun hard rock but I’m hearing some riffs that are perhaps Pete Townsend influenced in a few tracks. Just listen to the main riff on “Run For Your Life” and “Good Woman Gone Bad” and you’ll hear what I’m talking about. Tyler Kinder and Jarrad Morrice deliver irresistible guitar-work while Kinder‘s voice retains the shrieking power displayed on all their prior releases.

Of course, there are still obvious AC/DC licks in here such as the extremely powerful and goosebumps-inducing “Show You How to Rock and Roll” which perfectly launches the album. This song alone is worth the $10.99 they’re charging for the album on iTunes. “Cut Me Loose” has some ingredients borrowed from 1970’s Bon Scott-era antics. The album’s title track “Anywhere But Here” is the lead-off single and video and really does showcase what this album is all about.

In my opinion, Black Aces continue to be criminally overlooked and hopefully Anywhere But Here will deliver the success they deserve in the hard rock music industry today. ~ Review by Mark Horvath
