The French conductor François-Xavier Roth was born in France in 1971 and studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. In October 2000 he won joint first prize at the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London, following which he was appointed for two seasons assistant conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra. From 2000 to 2002 he was also assistant conductor with the Caen Orchestra. In 2003 François-Xavier Roth created the chamber orchestra Les Siècles (The Centuries), combining period and modern instruments, an orchestra which covers a vast repertoire from Baroque to contemporary music.
Conductor François-Xavier Roth and the “period” instrument orchestra Les Siècles have issued numerous superb recordings, with a repertoire ranging from Liszt to Ligeti. Naturally, it's always a particular treat to hear them in French repertoire, as on their album "France-Espagne" (Chabrier, Massenet, Ravel and Debussy). What a pity, then, that the Mirare label have allowed this recording of Bizet's Symphony in C and Jeux d'enfants suite, and Chabrier's Suite pastorale to go out of print. I hope either they, or perhaps the orchestra's regular label, Musicales Actes Sud, bring it back at an affordable price. These interpretations, superbly played, are full of the zest, brilliance and color that makes this ensemble and conductor's work a joy to hear. A delight!
