This is a sensational disc - an exploration of Berlioz such as few others offer. The viola sound of Lawrence Power has a lot to do with it - it is such a beautiful sound, so close to actual singing, that as soon as he plays it is as if Harold himself is expressing his feelings directly; added to this, the orchestra is of unusual brilliance under Andrew Manze's direction. The range of sounds is thrilling, bringing together all these landscapes as vividly as any art can. Harold en Italie is an amazing score, but one that has suffered a certain neglect, even though viola concertos from the 19th century are so thin on the ground.
Part of the reason is its very hybrid nature: it isn't really a viola concerto, not having the requisite virtuosity; the solo instrument comes in in a relaxed way that has little in common with most concertos. In fact it is a cross between a symphony, a tone poem and a concerto - unprecedented both in form, therefore, and in sound world. The soloist is abandoned on the sidelines in the last movement, only playing for a couple of minutes - hardly flattering, perhaps, but this is a work led entirely by musical considerations. The sense of blending of the viola with the orchestra is magical, creating real dialogue, not in any way angled to display - if anything, it is the orchestral writing itself that is virtuoso, in terms of new tone colourings. Power and Manze continue with Berlioz through two song arrangements which are utterly captivating also, a bit like continuations of Les Nuits d'ete. They end with a sideways step into Weber, making for a unique programme. David Cairns's note is a wonderful distillation of knowledge lightly held; the cover painting by Francis Hamel is also very apt both for its colours and boldness - too small, but nothing can be done about that!
