Trombonist Benny Green has always been a musician whose work virtually defies stylistic classification. Like Lucky Thompson, Dodo Marmarosa and Neil Hefti (in the days when Hefti used to play trumpet), he found himself on the fringes of the bop movement a decade and a half ago, although harmonically and rhythmically he was never a hopper. Undisturbed by this apparent anomaly he has enlivened the big band of Earl Hines (1942 and 1943), Charlie Ventura's "Bop For The People" unit (1948 to 1950), and the Hines Sextet of 1953. In addition he had led groups of his own and seems to have an acute predilection for the trombone-tenor-and-rhythm instrumentation. This is the line-up heard on this present LP and it is an ideal setting for Green's wide-ranging talents. His tone, as smooth as the wind and a model for budding trombonists, makes a good contrast with the harder sound of Johnny Griffin's tenor; in addition Benny's deceptively simple lines and long phrases are beautifully offset by Griffin's virile and intensely active style. As an inveterate collector of Benny's records on both British (Esquire, Vogue, Oriole, Parlophone and Brunswick) and American (Blue Note, Enrica, etc.) labels I find much of this music familiar. Green's Scene, with its ensemble vocal, is virtually the same as I Wanna Blow and has cropped up in numerous disguises on different labels; Stardust, played here in simply gorgeous fashion, is one of Benny's best party pieces, while the tune listed as Expubidence and cOmposed by Babe Gonzales was recorded by Gonzales for the American Apollo company in the mid-forties as 1280 Special. (No crystal ball is needed to discover that Expubidence11280 Special uses the chorus of Sweet Georgia Brown.) Junior Mance plays excellent piano throughout and seems now to have shaken off the last vestiges of the commercial 'soul' nonsense; Ben Riley makes an ideal choice of drummer in this context and is content to lay down a firm rhythmic foundation without any showmanship. Paul Chambers plays bass on Sucker, Glidin', Stardust and Expubidence, while Larry Gales takes over for the remainder. (This information is given on the label but not on the sleeve.)
