Founded in 1973 by Helmut Schwämmlein and his father Karl, the ensemble Musica Antiqua Ambergensis specialized in the performance of early music from the period 1200-1630 in historical performance practice. Focus of the work was the music of the Upper Palatinate, their former capital of Amberg and the free city of Regensburg. It developed the Ensemble concert series Spectaculum Musicae an open concert form with a mix of historic music, dance, mime and theater. The repertoire is documented in numerous disc recordings, recordings for radio and television, and concerts at home and abroad.
