Trumpeter Baikida Carroll was once again in the company of alto saxophonist Julius Hemphill for a January 1982 recording with pianist Anthony Davis, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Pheeroan Ak Laff for Soul Note called Shadows & Reflections. The material here sounded like it could have been a late Blue Note recording; in fact, there were times when the horns brought back flashbacks of the Jackie McLean-Charles Tolliver front line of the '60s. And for all their avant-garde credentials, this group sounded very comfortable and at home with the squirrelly free bop displayed here.
I've been scrubbing a jazz collection that had 1,000's of CD's (including pop/rock, folk, Americana, classical) getting rid of the ones that I knew I would never put on again (pop that is now meaningless, jazz that wasn't good enough, and quite frankly jazz that was very good but still too out–-I still have all my David Murray Octets). All of this is a setting to say that the 3 Baikida Carroll CD's have ended up in heavy rotation for me, because they are all so good. This particular CD has Julius Hemphill playing very well; the next 2, Bird Cage and Marionettes have his band. Marionettes is the most out, but worth it. I'm not good enough to express what he does except to say he harkens back to Miles and yet is very modern and very wonderful to listen to. If you haven't heard him get this one and Birds in a Cage. Not to be missed. Short of unintentional loss I will be listening to these until I end.
