The music of Ennio Morricone – completely recast into a jazz setting by drummer Arthur Vint and his associates! The project's maybe a bit like the famous John Zorn reworking of Ennio Morricone music from decades ago – but the approach here is more unified, and has as much ear for the tunefulness of the original compositions as it does for making something fresh and new! As you'd guess from the cover, the focus here is mostly on the western side of Morricone's scoring – and instrumentation includes tenor, harmonica, violin, guitars, piano, organ, bass clarinet, and flute – which makes for some great tonal combinations. Titles include "Death Rides A Horse", "The Sundown", "For A Few Dollars More", "Man With A Harmonica", "The Ecstasy Of Gold", "Vamos A Matar Companeros", and "Once Upon A Time In The West".

Arthur Vint & Associates new album, Death Rides A Horse, further explores themes from their debut album, Through The Badlands, this time focusing on the music of the great Spaghetti Western soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone. The band interprets music featured in the films A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West, Vamos A Matar Compaсeros, and of course, Death Rides A Horse in their unique country/jazz style. Bandleader, composer and drummer Arthur Vint steps out in a new role of arranger, taking Morricone's often orchestral pieces and tailoring them for his 9 piece ensemble of harmonica, violin, saxophone, bass clarinet, electric and acoustic guitars, piano, bass and drums. Ropeadope Records will release Death Rides A Horse on Friday, July 14th.

Last year, Arthur Vint released a very fun, very intriguing debut Through the Badlands (go check it out). It was an album that captured the spirit of the land and music of both his Tuscon, Arizona and NYC home turfs. It also earned the #27 slot on this site’s Best of 2016 list. On his follow-up, he keeps with the country-folk-jazz sound. He also brings new arrangements to the soundtracks of Ennio Morricone originally created for the Sergio Leone trilogy, Man With No Name. It’s plenty enjoyable, though lacks some of the inspired moments and sense of freedom of his debut. It wouldn’t be poorly argued to attribute this change to the fact that the debut had Vint original compositions, and it also wouldn’t be wrong to hope to see more of Vint’s own work on his next recording. Plenty here to like, though. All-stars like Jon Cowherd, Tony Scherr and Yvonnick Prene are among Vint’s Associates.
