The tarantella is an Italian folk dance, characterised by a fast and lively 6/8 rhythm, often accompanied by tambourines. This album presents thethree remaining forms of this ancient musical form: Pizzica-Taranta, Pizzica de core and Pizzica-scherma. Instruments: organetto (small accordion), chitarra battente (guitar), tambourine, violin, vocals. As the package notes ably explain, the tarantella has a long, centuries-old history that includes mass ecstatic trance dancing, originally to dispel the poison of a spider's bite. Eventually, these fast 6/8 meter dances of hysteria from Taranto spread and developed into set folk dances of which three forms remain. One of the ensembles dedicated to keep the tradition is the eight-member Arakne Mediterranea. Instrumentation are a small accordion, organetto, an Italian guitar citarra battente, a violin, and a tambourine.

There are four dancers and members of the ensemble sing solo. Details of the dance structures are provided. The Pizzaica-Taranta is a healing dance with a variety of melodies and rhythms. Indeed, the spider's bite had been expanded to any moral or physical disorder and the dancing become therapeutic. Local dancing soon became associated with feasts. Pizzica de corfe is such a celebratory form, related to courtship and social joyous events. The third form, Pizzica-scherma, the knives' dance) is not a relic but continues at fairs in the village of Torrepaduli. Some competition, challenges and defensive gestures are characteristic of this dance, formalized vestiges of more serious political claims of clans. Notes include photographs of the white and red clad and masked ensemble. The catchy rhythms and tunes with Medieval and Renaissance roots make these recordings an unusual fun, history-related album.
