Started back in 1996, the Dutch pop-punkers The Apers are definitely one of the world's best poppunk bands of today. People who loves the Ramones, Undertones and Screeching Weasel will be happy to find out The Apers used those same good ol' three chords and still managed to come with a totally refreshing sound to show you real Rock & Roll is ready to survive another century.

First released as a 10" vinyl album on Little People Records from the Netherlands, The Apers debum album (sometimes described as EP) containing 8 fast pop punk songs in good Ramones/Queers/Screeching Weasel tradition. Still raw and unprofessionally, but here's the beginning! The album later has been reissued on CD via legendary european punk label Stardumb Records, which was founded especially for spread The Apers' (and their friends) records for mass audience.

There are some really fucked-up so-called punk bands coming from the US these days, they are all over MTV. And 4 guys from The Netherlands are going to teach those bands a lesson. I'll explain why:

- This band's songs are exactly what some people would call pop-punk. Buzzsaw guitars, snotty vocals, backup-singers singing "na-na-na", "whoa, whoa, whoa" and "pa-pa-pa-paa", lyrics about girls and one thing that's essential for punk rock and what most of the MTV-punk bands lack: Rock & Roll. And that's one thing that's definitely there on this record, and lots of it.

The whole record is an almost 37 minute déja-vu of the sound of classic (pop)punkbands. Main influences of these guys are The Ramones, The Queers, Screeching Weasel and The Undertones and that's pretty obvious when you listen to this record. 12 songs without anything new, just the best of punk rock blended into one sound. Actually there is no need to explain this sound, you've heard it all before. But 12 songs that are just as catchy as a Beach Boys record make this an instant classic.

Even though they got started in 1997, it wasn't until 2002 that Rotterdam's Apers actually started releasing full-length albums. Since their early 7"s, compilation appearances, and cassette-only releases were usually rare, badly-recorded, or otherwise forgotten, a remedy comp was in order. Wild and Savage Apers (issued through the band's usual imprint, Stardumb) rounds up seven years of the Apers' energetic punk revivalist tomfoolery. The Ramones are the main influence here, filtered through the slaphappy aesthetic of Screeching Weasel and the Queers. Kevin Aper is the voice of the whiny playground smart aleck, too busy putting people down and trying to look cool to realize he isn't getting any dates. "I Hate Guys With Girlfriends", "Drama Queen (Of the Local Scene)," "Beat You Up" – you get the idea. Attitude occasionally stands in for melody and musicianship, and if you don't like songs about girls, you've come to the wrong place. But the Apers' songwriting naïveté and garage band amateurism is, for the most part, quite endearing, especially on cuts like "Lousy Day", "Pick Me Up", or the garbled, energetic early recordings "Want U2B My Baby" and "Pinball Wizard" (not that one). Fans of "Demons" and The Groovie Ghoulies, take note.

Dutch pop-punkers the Apers have made a decent career out of fairly utilitarian melodic ramalama in the great Lookout! Records tradition. Of course, with that long-running label falling apart in the early 2000s and most of the scene's key bands either going part-time or breaking up as their leaders pursue more mature career paths (The Mr. T Experience's Dr. Frank is now a best-selling novelist, while the Smugglers' Grant Lawrence is a popular disc jockey in his native Canada), someone needs to step up their game to fill the vacuum. Reanimate My Heart shows that the Apers may well be that band, even if they perhaps aren't quite there yet. There are no outright clunkers among these ten well-constructed tracks, but several lack the spark of lyrical wit or tuneful hooks that would push them beyond merely serviceable. However, the album's better tracks are killers: "Rather Eat Glass" and "Back Against the Wall" mix the requisite snottiness with hyperactively tuneful riffs, and even the lyrically average opener "It's All Over You Know" throws in some surprisingly Beatlesque backing vocals. At its best, Reanimate My Heart is every bit as good as a quality Screeching Weasel or Queers album, which is all the praise it needs.
