Besides being one of the most versatile of Danish composers, Anders Koppel (b. 1947) is an outstanding musician in many genres. For this world premiere recording of his two double concertos Koppel has selected four outstanding soloists – one of them his renowned son, Benjamin Koppel – who express themselves in a wealth of well-written music with fine orchestral accompaniment. It is music that is at one and the same time entirely classical and entirely free.

When you hear Anders Koppel's scored music, glimpses of all sorts of other music than classical inevitably surface: salsa, blues, exotic world music, tango and skewed Balkan rhythms. These are the different aspects of Anders Koppel that rub off on one another, and it isn't because he has any plan to make classical music more "rhythmic" or rock and jazz music more classical. "I don't want to demonstrate some manifesto. I just make the music I can, and I speak the language that is mine," says Anders Koppel. "It isn't something I think about - that's just the way it is."

It must also be noted that given Benjamin Koppel’s background in jazz and improvised music, the score of the Saxophone and Piano Concerto includes improvised sections in the saxophone’s part although “the audience must not notice when the improvisation begins and ends” (the composer’s words). ... Anders Koppel’s music is superbly crafted, colourful, often beautiful and at times rather gripping in spite – or because of – its eclecticism, although the latter is never overdone and anyway eschews any vulgarity. The music is accessible and often strongly expressive although it must be rather taxing on the performers’ part. This is obviously not a problem for these musicians who play the music for all it is worth with accomplished technical expertise and profound understanding. The recording and production are again up to Dacapo’s best standards.

I have to admit it was my guilty pleasure to listen to this and two other of Koppel's CDs over the last couple of years. I have a soft spot for Koppel's beautiful saxophone writing that while stemming from long jazz tradition seems to trenscend both jazz and classical spheres and inhabit a world of its own. Just listen to the saxophone concerto's beginning! Wow! :) Anders Koppel is a brother of late Thomas Koppel, whose Moonchild's Dream I shared a while back.
