Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Matthias Aeschbacher, conductor, Anna Maria D. Dahl, viola, Yana Deshkova, violin, Mattias Johansson, tuba, Claus Ettrup Larsen, flute, Mette Nielsen, harp

Music by Danish composer Anders Koppel (b 1947) springs from disparate musical influences. He was trained as a clarinetist and pianist, and since his father Herman was a composer and pianist, Anders grew up in a classical environment. But he also spent years in an experimental rock band. His musical language is tonal, with pungent dissonance, and his harmonies take interesting turns. Of the three concertos offered here, the Sinfonia Concertante (2007) for violin, viola, clarinet, bassoon, and orchestra is the most absorbing.

    Anders Koppel - Concertos (2011)

When you hear Anders Koppel's scored music, glimpses of all sorts of other music than classical inevitably surface: salsa, blues, exotic world music, tango and skewed Balkan rhythms. These are the different aspects of Anders Koppel that rub off on one another, and it isn't because he has any plan to make classical music more "rhythmic" or rock and jazz music more classical.

Concertos features Koppel's approach to larger forces and reveals a more diversity set of influences and tonal colours. The Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, clarinet, bassoon and orchestra finds Koppel reducing the groups size to focus on solos, dialogues and closer relationships, sketched in novel neoclassical language and powered by pulses from the timpani. The Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra pits these airy solo instruments against equally lightweight tings from triangle, wind chimes and orchestral bells, creating a wispy and impressionistic soundworld. Altogether different is Koppel's Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra, featuring larger forces and juxtaposing brash brassy blasts with moments of light comedy. March rhythms offset fluid swathes of sound in which strings and horns are entwined and exposed.
    Cyclic Defrost

Another release with three concertos by Anders Koppel. While I find his Saxophone Concertos (as well as Mezzo Saxophone Quintet, see my previous shares of his music) to be the best, these compositions are very melodically and harmonically inventive and keep you engaged. While Tuba Concerto is more conventional, Sinfonia Concertante is chock full of whimsical twists and turns. Anders Koppel is a brother of late Thomas Koppel, whose Moonchild's Dream I shared a while back.
