And The Neighbors is an acoustic duo inspired by the sounds of Appalachia blended with the sonic grit of the Lower East Side. Debra DeMuth’s voice with an emotive, old-time resonance is featured vocally and Dave Houghton (of indie-rock groups, Fancy Trash and The Reejers), adds a dissonant vocal harmony along with his well-mastered guitar playing which can sway from delicate to furious strumming in an instant. Banjo, mandolin, autoharp, cigar box guitar, piano and organ, as well as chains and cello fill out their alt-country, folk pop sound.
Each And The Neighbors song offers something to say about love or life. The words are earnest, the vocals are raw yet beautiful and the melodies are their own.
Take a journey with And The Neighbors on their debut album, No Fences, which features guests such as Terry Adams from NRBQ and Robin Lane of Robin Lane and The Chartbusters as well as Neil Young’s Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere. No Fences holds nothing back as it takes you from thigh-slapping tunes to songs that want to wrap around you on a cold night. No Fences will introduce you to a duo reminiscent of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Loretta Lynn and Jack White, Richard and Linda Thompson, Johnny Cash and June Carter.
Debra began her songwriting career as a means of healing from cancer. She lost use of her voice for a period of time from cancer surgery and found writing to be a way to affirm her gratitude for life. As her voice returned, her writing found melodies and Debra found that the only way to express them was to lend them her own singing voice. The first of these songs was called, “I Am Here” and appears on No Fences.
Dave has been a hard working front man for indie-rock bands for over 20 years. He has been called “a force of nature” and “everything you could ask for from a 21st-century singer-songwriter.” His catalog of songs spans well into the hundreds. With And The Neighbors Dave lends his unique ability to turn a traditional genre on its head and create a fresh brand of musical experience. Together Debra and Dave are And The Neighbors.
