    Recording Stravinsky seemed an obvious choice for me, as The Rite of Spring sparked my calling as a musician: after hearing it for the first time in a concert with my parents when I was four, I immediately wanted to start playing an instrument, struck by the intensity of this music and the evident jubilation of the musicians sharing it. I wanted to enter into this dance myself! Stravinsky's Violin Concerto subsequently became a part of my competition programmes as a young person, and it never really left me. Its strength, its roughness, its modest lyricism, its virtuosity – never ostentatious – and the originality of its dialogue with the orchestra, most notably in its particular complicity with the woodwinds, all make it a singular piece in my eyes.

    My third film score (The Red Violin) gave me an opportunity to visit my own past, for my father, John Corigliano (I was a ‘jr.’) was a great solo violinist and the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic for more than a quarter of a century. My childhood years were punctuated by snatches of the great concertos being practiced by my father, as well as scales and technical exercises he used to keep in shape. Every year, he played a concerto with the Philharmonic (and in other venues), and I vividly remember the solo preparation, violin and piano rehearsals, orchestral rehearsals, and the final tension-filled concerts…
