Who was Alexander Tcherepnin? I only knew his name. I learned his father was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander himself a teacher to Serge Prokofiev. Which means he was at the centre of important musical periods in Russia; romantism and modernism. Further, maternally (Benois) as well as paternally (Tcherepnin), he was a descendant of well-to-do families of architects, lawyers, physicians, musicians and painters. The Tcherepnins belonged to St Petersburg’s high society; fled the city because of famine and cholera, and a couple of years after the revolution broke out, the family took their refuge in Paris.
Wiki mentions an impressive list of family friends, all names that mattered in Russia’s cultural life towards the close of the 19th Century and beyond. Dostoyevsky, Mussorgsky, Diaghilev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Liadov, Glazunov, Stravinsky etc.; in one way or other, they’d all been part of the family’s social entourage. Alexander himself, well-behaved, sophisticated cosmopolitan as he was – look at his portrait on the cover, he’s quite the aristocratic gentleman of good taste and style - counted quite a few celebrities among his personal friends too.
At age 15, precocious Alexander had already composed dozens of major works. This was even before he started his academic studies of music. As mentioned above, the music lies somewhere in between the romantic period and modernism; expect a blend of Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. Well, sort of. It is very pleasant to listen to.
