The Dutch singer/songwriter Alex Roeka was born in Ravenstein, The Netherlands and was sent to the boarding school at age nine. At age ten he heard Little Richard sing "Long Tall Sally", and that became one of the triggers to his musical career. When he was about fifteen years old he read poems by Nijhoff, Van Ostaijen, Slauerhoff and Lucebert which brought a naive fascination with poetry in motion. During a Christmas break he fell hopelessly in love with an unattainable girl and, in the closed world of boarding school, that grew to a kind of obsession. He taught himself to play guitar and joined the school band. After high school he went to study psychology in Nijmegen, but after achieving the exam he left to sea. He worked on a tugboat in the Adriatic waters and during one of his voyages he was initiated into the secrets of the erotic by an Italian queen of love and took an impossible love for her. He was put off board and made a trip to Italy, North Africa and Spain. Ended up in Genoa, where he signed on for two trips to West Africa. When he returned to the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, he resumed his studies and graduated as a psychologist and practiced that profession for some time. Still he chose to go back to sea and made several voyages from Singapore to Southeast Asia and Japan. On board he came in the grip of the music again and founded with the saxophone playing a ship's cook a band, which toured Germany for six months. Now he tours the Netherlands for years and occurs mainly in theaters and playhouses. "Wildernis" is his second album and is a wonderful example of a very talented singer/songwriter, who describes his own life, laced with poetic texts and black humor.
