It’s a little bit funny having all these bands placing themselves back in the Rock / Metal map with a second album released over a quarter of a century after their (back then) promising debut LP. I by no means judge on their decision; it’s just that so many years have passed by that it’s a little bit awkward buying the -x- band’s follow-up as a dad the same time you got the debut when you were at the age of you son! Still, as long as the music’s good, who shall complain…
AIRRACE was formed in 1982 in England and released their “Shaft Of Light” first LP two years later. Featuring Jason Bonham on drums, I can assume the band’s fame grew big enough due to his name and only. The album was pretty good too, needless to say, being melodic enough but remaining ‘British’ in its base. Nothing more was heard afterwards - only singer Keith Murell remained in the circuit by offering his voice to Irish hard rockers MAMA’S BOYS - and I confess I was surprised to see AIRRACE on the 'Firefest' billing two years ago, let aside the fact they did perform well for 40 minutes. And now, “Back To The Start” is available to let some good times roll… let’s hope.
I do not know if the band’s 'Firefest' appearance made them consider the making of a new album or vice versa, but what counts the most is that “Back To The Start” looks good. Not excellent, but surely above average. The style remains the same, melodic Rock with a strong American touch by a band not denying its age. The songs have that 80s arena vibe with a fat sound and some joyful guitar lines. The keyboards back the melodies adequately and the rhythm section gives the green light for dancing. The vocals of Murrell are in good shape and some high-pitched singing is a scenario seen multiple times in the album.
The duration is ideal, 42 minutes of fun. A main problem is an absence of the hit song that will give the whole album the boost needed. Nonetheless, “Back To The Start” can keep you good company if you’re a friend of classic AOR / melodic Rock and if you did not know that name by now you can give this new CD a try, provided you always admired the proto-AOR works of e.g. JOURNEY, FOREIGNER and BOSTON
