Ahmad Al-Khatib is among the rising stars of contemporary Arabic music. Born in a Jordanian Palestinian refugee camp in 1974, Al-Khatib went on to study cello and musicology at Yarmuk University (Jordan). Following graduation, he relocated to Ramallah, joining the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in East Jerusalem in 1997, where he taught and later became director of the Oriental Music Studies department. It was during this time that he and other teachers, including Youssef Hbeishe formed the Karloma ensemble, a small chamber orchestra dedicated to performing contemporary Palestinian music. Following Israeli crackdowns in 2002, Al-Khatib's visa was not renewed and since 2004, he has taught Modal Music Composition and Theory at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

While a full album of Oud and percussion duets may seem minimal in the extreme, the rainbow of sounds these two master musicians deliver is anything but! Percussion wizard Youssef Hbeiseh provides an extraordinary range of colors from a small arsenal of percussion instruments including the riqq - a large tambourine/frame drum, the darbuka, a single-skinned goblet drum, incredibly versatile bendir - a large, tunable wooden frame drum capable of producing deep, resonant bass tones and the lithe and muscular Iranian Zarb.

The three movement suite Sifir El Khuruj (Exodus) is an excellent example of Al-Khatib compositional approach, skillfully blending western compositional strategies, hints of Andalusia and his own skillful use of traditional oriental modes. The title track "Sabil" displays some of Al-Khatib's most exciting uses of harmony, while shifting between various modes with lightening-fast finger work that's a cross Ralph Towner and Paco De Lucia. Bayya E-Ward (The Rose Vendor) was the first work composed by Al-Khatib in Sweden, and is in many ways the most advanced piece on this program; employing a complex rhythmic structure coupled with a wide ranging melody in the exotic, microtonally-inflected "Bastanikar" mode, simultaneously conveying feelings of nostalgia and a feeling of unease. Percussion fanatics will also have much delight in, especially the extraordinary rhythmic tour de force, Li Alix (recorded as seven over-dubs of glorious drumming)!

Distributor harmonia mundi deserves our thanks for making this disc widely available: a true testament to the creativity, variety and vitality of contemporary Arabic music.
