"You can freely paraphrase Louis XIV and say: I am the orchestra! I am the cho¬rus! I am also the conductor!” With these words Hector Berlioz paid homage to a man who was indeed all of these things put together: Franz Liszt.
This eulogy, however, was not only for Liszt, the man; it was also for his instrument and the compositions he wrote for it, an instrument which, also in part thanks to Liszt, became the dominant instrument of bourgeois musical culture in the 19th century: the piano. The reason for this dominance? Liszt himself gave the answer by ascribing to the piano and to the ten fingers of the pianist the ability to reproduce the sonorities and harmonies of an entire orchestra. The improvements made to the piano at that time (around 1825), e.g. the new Erard repetition action and the exponsion of the instrument's range to seven octaves, support these claims.

Yuri Rozum was born in Moscow into a family of musicians in 1954. His father was a famous baritone and his mother is the conductor of the Academic Russian Folk Choir. At the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire he studied under Lev Naumov and Yevgeni Malinin - the favorite pupils and assistants of the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus. In addition Rozum took classes with Valery Afanassiev, Lazar Berman and Bella Davidovich. Yuri himself was considered to be one of the most talented and promising students, and he was selected to participate in the Queen Elizabeth Piano Competition, held in Brussels in 1975. However, the Soviet authorities refused to give the necessary permission, for religious and political reasons, and it was not until six years later that the young pianist was allowed to travel abroad. Once that barrier was raised, Yuri became laureate of numerous international competitions and festivals - the Barcelo- no International Piano Competition in 1980 (first prize and gold medal), the Montreal International Music Competition in 1984 (second prize) and many others.
Despite his evident success, the talented pianist was only allowed to perform in Eastern Europe. He has played with numerous well-known orchestras - the Bratislava Chamber Orchestra, the Grand Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (conducted by V. Fedoseyev), the Moscow Symphony Orchestra (conducted by V. Dudarova) or the Bol- schoi Theatre Orchestra (conducted by A. Lazarev). After a long period of political opression Yuri Rozum was officially recognized. He was awarded the medal of the "Supreme Soviet" and the title "Merited artist of Russia". His name has recently become well-known in the West, and he has performed in concert in Germany, Austria, Italy, Australia, Japan, as well as in the USA where he gave a number of very success ful solo performances.
