Genre: electronica

The Beeps is the 2005 album by electronic music artist Brandon LaSan, known under his pseudonym Yoko Solo. This was released on the Quake Trap label.
If you've already tired of the Four Tet phenomenon and are ready to join in on the Four Tet backlash, The Beeps can serve as a sort of practice target. San Francisco-based electronic musician Yoko Solo operates with the same basic tools as Four Tet (laptop, drum machines, samples, found sounds, etc…), and achieves the same sort of exuberant chaos as Everything Ecstatic, but does so in such a gleefully filthy manner as to make Four Tet's flawless genre mashings look like the work of an OCD nut. Yoko Solo's duct tape and scissors collage approach to electronic dance music proves to be a refreshing take on the genre.

"Don't Fall Asleep I'm Warning You Don't Fall Asleep" slaps together cinematic vocal samples, Herbie Hancock-flavored electric piano and syncopated staccato drum rhythms, with all the surgical accuracy of a Looney Toons mallet. Instead of using technology to hide the fact that the song's blood and guts have been spliced together, The Beeps takes every opportunity to highlight those splices. It isn't every day that an album celebrates its own process, but Yoko Solo steers clear of wank territory by making certain that his material is also danceable. "Infinite Collapse Pt. One: I Blew It (Infinite Undo)", for instance, feels like a self-indulgent trip into Solo's lab; he tweaks its central synth riff to no end, but once the riff's rhythm is fully dissected, it falls so deep into the pocket of a surprise hip-hop drumbeat that you might feel like shedding a single tear of joy. What a glorious mess.

It only takes a few minutes of listening to "Pigbucket Blam Blam" to realize how messy The Beeps is going to get. Here's a song that marries two sounds that want nothing to do with one another: the bass and drum work falls somewhere between early '90s Chicago industrial roboticism and early '80s NYC ghetto rap. Layered atop this clatter is what sounds like a guitar riff from a Prince song, distorted and pitch-shifted beyond any tuneful recognition. Every twelve year-old with ProTools and a laptop could have gone in and made these elements sound more "agreeable", but Yoko Solo left them alone to stew in their sonic animosity. It's audacious and ugly stuff, but it's as close as electronic music has ever come to sounding the way punk must have sounded in the '70s. It seems basic and obvious, but if grabbing sounds from different places and sticking them together is what you do, why bother disguising it?
