In less than two decades George Gershwin's vision of American music conquered the various (and sometimes competing) spheres of influence that were Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, Hollywood, and the concert stage. The writer David Hamilton has described Gershwin's dynamic genius as "executive virtuosity"— and that is just the right phrase. For Gershwin could call the shots as multi-faceted composer, arranger, concert performer, and, had he wished, recording artist. Most important, he rewrote the rules of songwriting.
