Japanese 1st Press CD with bonus track

When I found a power metal band named “Wizards”, I assumed the worst. I am always cautious with this genre, and a cheesy name doesn’t bring my expectations up at all. Thankfully I was mostly wrong about this group. They are pretty cheesy but they have some amazing music on this disc, and it shows that the band’s albums are definitely worth checking out.

First off, I must proclaim that all the musicianship in Wizards is good. No worries about crappy singing or bland instruments here. While the singer is a little unoriginal, he fits the music well and does a good job with his role. The guitarist is highly skilled and pulls off some incredible solos, while his bass counterpart keeps a very good rhythm. Keyboards are also excellent and drive the music nicely, frequently using symphonic sounds. Drums are very solid as well.

As for the music, Wizards sounds like slightly prog-influenced power metal with some symphonic keyboards. The songs on the album that I highly recommend are The Kingdom, Fallen Angels, and Daydreaming. If your copy has the bonus track, Freedom, then I would recommend that as well. All four of these tracks display the wonders this band can accomplish. Additionally, a few ballad-like sections are present during the album, which are done very well with the exception of the particularly ballady song, Love and Recall. Unfortunately, Love and Recall isn’t alone, as there are a few tracks on here that are pretty average. They don’t detract from the album too much though, as they still manage to be decent.

The Kingdom is a definite recommendation for fans of power metal. As for those less fond of the genre, you may want to download it first to see if you like it, as it still contains some typical elements of the genre. Whichever side you’re on, do check this out, as it is quite an interesting listen. This is a pretty unique power metal album that should definitely be looked into.
