Don Giovanni, a libertine, a rake with a devil-may-care attitude, is portrayed magnificently by Teddy Tahu Rhodes in this Opera Australia production, where he first appears on stage in a costume where less is definitely more! Charismatic and sexy, Rhodes’ acting and singing are magnificent. His misused servant, Leporello, is played by Conal Coad, who skilfully promotes the opera’s comic elements whilst delivering a thumping bass full of drama.
The classic stage designs of Carl Friedrich Oberle form the backdrop to the drama of Don Giovanni’s last day on earth, before he is hurled in to Hell’s flames by the Commendatore, Daniel Sumegi, whose basso profundo is befittingly momentous.
Rachael Durkin (Donna Anna), Jacqueline Dark (Donna Elvira), Taryn Fiebig (Zerlina), Henry Choo (Don Ottavio) and Andrew Jones (Masetto) all deliver superlative singing as Mozart’s enthralling music flows from the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, adeptly guided by the baton of Mark Wigglesworth. A triumphant production from the director, Göran Järvefelt.

Reviews: This live 2011 recording of Don Giovanni by Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House is notable for the bubbling energy and tight ensemble work of its cast. The singers' animation and high spirits are practically palpable, and judging from the enthusiastic laughter and spontaneous applause from the audience, their performance was immediately engaging. Comedy in opera is always tough to pull off, but the disciplined coordination of these performers seems to have given them the freedom to be genuinely relaxed and funny. Mark Wigglesworth leads the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra in an exceptionally lively reading of the score that's always dramatically apt; the sinister chill of the final encounter between the Don and the Commendatore sounds genuinely shocking after all the levity that has come before it.
The cast doesn't dazzle with vocal brilliance; this is a good version of the opera for its energy and wit, but listeners who want the luster and polish of superstar performances may want to look elsewhere. Teddy Tahu Rhodes embodies the protagonist beautifully, but his vowels are so conspicuously skewed that his voice has a covered quality. The vocal standouts are Rachelle Durkin as Donna Anna and Henry Choo as Don Ottavio, who give consistently secure and musically sensitive performances, and sing with warmth and passion. Conal Coad's Leporello is conventional but rock-solid vocally and reliably humorous. As Zerlina, Taryn Fiebig starts out sounding breathy, but by the time she gets to "Vedrai, carino," she sounds substantially more at ease. Jacqueline Dark's voice has more edge than is ideal even for Donna Elvira. Daniel Sumegi is a stentorian Commendatore, but in his invitation scene, he is very weirdly, unnaturally amplified.
