The set up for this early recording of Vivaldi's Motetts in 2000 is relatively unknown today - the Academia Montis Regis directed by Alessandro De Marchi, featuring 6 Motets of Vivaldi (though the readings slightly differ from the 'Critical Edition' under Ricordi).
The six works are RV 623 (solo soprano), Rv 628 (solo contralto), Rv 629 (solo soprano), RV 630 (solo soprano), Rv 631 (solo soprano) and Rv 633 (solo contralto).
There are quite a number of soprano motet recordings after this one, namely the Ciofi/Biondi, Kermes/Marcon, Gauvin, and still about two more available. The soprano chosen for this reading is German coloratura leggiero Anke Hermann. Her renditions are clean, agile and lean. Her Rv 630, arguably the most famous motet of Vivaldi, is spot on without being really distinguished. One may opt for the renditions of Kirkby or Harper, but Hermann's is preferable, in my view, to Kermes's.
The three contralto motets chosen for this album are the real gems of this recording. They are sung by the terrific mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli, a student of the great tenor Alfredo Kraus, amongst others. Some of the contralto motets have been recorded later by countertenors Andreas Scholl and David Daniels. It is a real treat to hear a contralto version of these wonderful works, since it is evident by now that Antonio Vivaldi's favourite 'fach' is the contralto.
Polverelli pull off all the three motets with great facility and aplomb. Her intonation is teriffic, and articulation flawless. Plus the fact that she owns a low mezzo-soprano with a really generous range, reaching right down to the contralto fach's low notes with absolutely no strain. Needless to say, her coloratura technique is jaw-dropping.
I really wonder that, since this album was recorded in 2000, why should people still crave for Bartoli's Vivaldi, since Polverelli's renditions here, in my view, really puts Bartoli's to shame! A reason that I gather is that Opus 111 only released this version in 2003.
So, as always, luck, in most instances, is all a matter of timing.
